Service Dogs in Training

Service Dogs in Training and the trainer have access to Illinois State University under The Guide Dog Act, Public Act 93-0532, The White Cane Law and the Guide Dog Access Act, 720 ILCS 630.

Any student requesting to be a trainer of a service dog on campus is required to complete a Request for Service Dog in Training.

Steps to Request a Service Animal in Training

  1. The student will complete a Request for Service Animal in Training.

  2. Once a request has been received, a coordinator will reach out to the student to discuss their request and next steps in the process.

  3. The student must provide documentation from their service dog training facility/organization. Documentation should be typed, dated and signed on the facility /organization's letterhead and must include:

    • Verification that the dog is a registered participant of the training program
    • The dog has required qualifications to be assigned to the puppy raiser/trainer
    • The student has fulfilled the requirements to be a registered puppy raiser/trainer with that organization/facility
  4. The request will be reviewed and the student will be contacted to schedule an Access Training appointment.

  5. At the Access Training appointment, the student and the coordinator will review their rights and responsibilities. The student will be instructed on preparing and sending faculty notification letters.
