Student Rights and Responsibilities

As a student registered with Student Access and Accommodation Services (SAAS), students have rights and responsibilities.

Rights

Students have a right to:

  • Confidentiality, as all documentation of student disability or medical/mental health condition provided to SAAS is confidential and may not be released to any other person or agency without written permission from the student.
  • Voice their concern about services or accommodations. If a student has a concern about services or accommodations, please follow the published appeal/grievance process.
  • Access to all university offerings, including courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities.
  • Information reasonably available in accessible formats.
  • An equal opportunity to learn.
  • Receive reasonable accommodations, which may include academic adjustments or auxiliary aids and services.

Responsibilities

Students must:

  • Check the Faculty Notification Letter for accuracy and email the letter to each instructor at the beginning of the semester from their IllinoisState.edu email address.
  • Discuss approved accommodations with instructors during office hours.
  • Complete ALL requirements for the course(s) for which they registered.
  • Schedule necessary appointments with coordinators, instructors, advisors, and any volunteers who may be assisting them.
  • Communicate with SAAS staff through IllinoisState.edu email account.
  • Request specific accommodations for any clinical, student teaching, professional practice, or internship placement by meeting with coordinator to review accommodations prior to starting the placement.
  • Provide documentation that meets criteria to be eligible for services from an appropriate licensed clinical professional addressing the impact of the disability and/or medical/mental health condition in the University setting.
  • Identify themselves as individuals with disabilities and/or medical/mental health conditions when accommodations are needed.

Accommodation Responsibilities

Training has been provided to students on how to use online accommodation request system. To access accommodations, a student must submit requests in the time frames listed below and comply with the following procedures for requesting accommodations through the online accommodation request system at StudentAccess.IllinoisState.edu.

Exam Requests

Students must:

  • Submit exam requests at least three business days before the scheduled exam. If the deadline is missed, the request will be denied.
  • Tell instructor(s) every time they plan to take an exam at SAAS, with at least one week’s notice prior to the exam.
  • Get instructor permission for extra materials/resources or alternative date/time. Permission must be received by SAAS prior to the beginning of the exam.
  • Must follow the schedule to submit final exam requests by the published due date.
  • Understand exams are proctored in person and monitored by video. If a student is found in an exam room with unapproved materials, they can be held to the regulations in the Code of Student Conduct.

Notetaking Services

The student must:

  • Confirm the need of a notetaker.
  • Attend class regularly and meet the requirements of the class for credit.
  • Access notes through the Accessible Information Management (AIM) online system.
  • Inform SAAS if the services of a volunteer notetaker are no longer needed. The volunteer may then be available to assist another student.
  • Notify SAAS if there are any issues with receiving the notes online.

Sign Language Services

The student must:

  • Request sign language interpreters and CART at least two weeks prior to the start of the semester. For events, these should be requested at least five business days before the date of need.

Student Access and Accommodation Services Rights and Responsibilities

Student Access and Accommodation Services has the right to:

  • Work with faculty/staff of Illinois State University to facilitate accommodations.
  • Support established standards for all University courses, programs, services, activities, facilities, and the evaluation of students on this basis.
  • Request and receive current documentation supporting requests for accommodations.
  • Not support a request for accommodations if documentation demonstrates an unwarranted request or if appropriate documentation is not provided.
  • Select among equally effective accommodations.
  • Not support an accommodation that compromises academic standards, poses undue hardship, or affects the safety of others. 

Student Access and Accommodation Services has the responsibility to:

  • Provide information to students with disabilities and/or medical/mental health conditions in accessible formats when requested.
  • Ensure that University offerings, when viewed in their entirety, are available and usable in the most integrated and appropriate settings.
  • Evaluate individuals on their abilities, not their disabilities and/or medical/mental health conditions.
  • Provide or arrange reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities and/or medical/mental health conditions at university functions.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of records and communications and disclose only where permitted or required by law.
