Pregnancy/Parenting Accommodations
Illinois State University is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for pregnant and parenting students. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities including academic, educational, extracurricular, athletic, and other programs or activities of schools. This prohibition includes discrimination against pregnant and parenting students based on sex.
Students may request accommodations based on general pregnancy needs or accommodations based on a pregnancy related complication. Examples of pregnancy accommodations might include but are not limited to providing a larger desk or pregnancy related absences.
Steps to Request Pregnancy Accommodations
-
The student must submit a Request for Pregnancy Accommodations.
-
Once a request has been received, a coordinator will reach out to the student to discuss their request and next steps in the process.
-
The student must provide documentation from their health care provider. Documentation should be typed, dated and signed on the provider's letterhead.
- Must specify the due date
- List any complications
- Provide a recommendation for any accommodations with a timeline
-
When all required documentation is submitted and the student has spoken with a Coordinator, the request for accommodations will be reviewed and the student will be contacted to schedule an Access Training appointment
-
At the Access Training appointment, the student and the coordinator will discuss approved accommodations specific to the student’s individual needs and review their rights and responsibilities. The student will be introduced to the procedures for requesting accommodations as well as how to prepare faculty notification letters.
